Ok, so after the whole financial aid crisis, which has been partially remedied. My classes are paid for now, but I couldn't get some of the courses back as they are full now. So I am scrambling and trying to make a schedule out of the slim pickins this close to the start of the semester. My biggest worry is getting into my French class which is the final course to complete my minor.
Then on my way home I got a call on my cell phone just before the train pulled into the station for my stop and I would be heading home. My mom asked me if I had felt it. Being from California I immediately thought of an earthquake, and sure enough she went on to tell me that we had just experienced an earthquake. Of course since I was on the train I did not feel it. When I got off the train I noticed how many people were staning around outside the brownstones on my block and the next. I overheard conversations of people talking about everything shaking and even some saying that they wanted to move. A couple of people asked me if I had felt it and I said that I was on the train, it's interesting when people who don't normally talk to you start talking to you. When I got home I saw on the news that it was indeed an earthquake, 5.8 magnitude out of Richmond, VA, I was just there in April.
I haven't experienced an earthquake in years, and this was so strange to me, it was such a normal occurrence in California that what was felt in NY would have barely registered to those used to experiencing earthquakes, and I didn't feel it so it was like it didn't happen. But that was all that was on TV, continuous coverage of people evacuating buildings midtown and interviews with people about what they felt. The images of people standing in Times Square, not walking at a fast pace to get to their next destination, but just standing was very strange. We called my family in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania and swapped war stories. Amazingly there was some damage here in NY which is pretty scary considering what could happen if there were to be a bigger quake.
Anyway, all is quiet now, the mets are losing again and the kids are settling down. Tomorrow I'm going to the craft store!!! I absolutely cannot wait to get back from that trip and get scrapping for real.
